A Meditation

For Celebration Sunday

My father once told me that a good leader builds community.
She recruits talented people,
gives them the freedom to do what they are good at
and supports them in any way she can.

I have been lucky to be able to do this here at First Parish.
Looking around this Sanctuary I see the faces of people who have shared their talents with the children and youth of the Sunday School. Some have helped shape the vision, some have taught classes; and others have pitched in where needed.

Our children and youth have been active too. They  have collected coats for the homeless, gathered lightly used toys for Cradles to Crayons, made get well cards, assembled gift boxes for those in need, and raised money for an animal shelter and hurricane relief. They have learned about all kinds of faith and how to have respect for themselves and others.

We have a special kind of school here. We are inspired by a covenant that reminds us to love truth, be kind, to unite in the service of all and to cherish the living earth. We have children and  youth who participate each week, even though their lives are busy. We have dedicated volunteers who work with them to carry out this vision.

I want to inspire you, of all ages, to continue to take these values out into the world, and put them into action. Decide what matters most to you. Join with others. Start small.
Big changes often start with small acts.

As Margaret Mead once said,

Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world.
Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.

In this way, our covenant is translated into action.
We can make a difference working together.
We already have.

Thank you.
Amen

Benediction

Go in peace, speak the truth,
Give thanks every day.
Respect the earth and her creatures
For they are alive like you.
Live simply.
Be of service.
Amen
